He had realized that his passion for sailing could make him become a somebody, an outcome that he had not achieved in other disciplines. Throughout his life he built two boats, and used each of them for a voyage around the world. Then he de- cided not to build his third boat himself. He had her designed by Rodger Martin, a South African desi- gner relocated in Newport (USA), where he had her built. It was a very advanced and light 60 footer that he named Coyote . With Coyote he decided to take part in the 1992 edi- tion of the Vendée Globe. The boat was to be taken to Les Sables-d'Olonne, in France, the starting point of the Vendée.Mike faced that voyage solo. Many days after his departure, Coyote was found capsized adrift in the ocean, but Mike's fate remains unknown. It was never found out why the boat lost her bulb, which caused her to capsize immediately, but that was Plant's last sailing trip.
