O
n the afternoon of August 10th, Kim
Wall, a thirty-year-old freelance journali-
st, told her boyfriend that she was going
to Refshaleøen, the harbour of Copen-
hagen. There she would interview Pe-
ter Madsen, the eccentric inventor who had built a
submarine collecting a crowdfunded sum of 200,000
euros.
Kim was a lively, not gorgeous, but clever young
woman who had worked for The Guardian, The New
York Times and many other leading newspapers.
She was making a name for herself, and when she
contacted the editorial offices to offer her services,
senior editors listened to her. They knew that Kim ne-
ver proposed sloppy stories, unlike many colleagues
of hers who, instead of moving to hunt for contents
to write interesting articles, preferred to rework and
recycle the news they read in other newspapers. So
they ended up contacting editors with stuff that had
already been read over and over again.
