In order to put the boat in a low ratio you need to
create full, deep sails that have a lot of twist and the
draft far forward to give us a wide groove.
We acheve this by easing the outhaul, easing the
mainsheet and vang (depending on point of sail),
easing headsail sheet a little and ensuring the
halyards on all sails are sufficiently tight to take the
draft position well forward.
Medium/strong winds and moderate long sea
Now that the boat is no longer slamming and being
knocked off course by waves, we should be able to
settle her down into a smoother rhythm as the waves
have a steadier pattern and longer wavelength. The
medium ratio increases the top speed by reducing
the amount of drag on the sails and it also allows us
to point higher too, giving medium power and me
-
dium pointing ability.
To obtain we need to flatten the sails and reduce the
amount of twist they have. However, we still want the
draft position relatively forward to allow the helm to
guide the boat smoothly over the waves
When heaving-to with the storm main-
sail and the storm jib, the balance results
from the back-winded storm jib tending to
bear away while the rudder tends to luff up
Although this boat has reduced sails, she still has
too much canvas up, and this is why she is listing
excessively
