S
olovelaNet has recently announced in advance
that the Elan shipyard was building a new model
of the GT range. Today the official press release of
the shipyard is available: the new model will be a
49-footer (not a 47-footer as we thought and publi
-
shed) named GT6.
This boat marks a turning point in the history of Elan.
She was designed by Humphreys regarding water li-
nes and by the firm F.A. Porsche, belonging to Por-
sche Design Group, the Porsche design studio. Up
to now all the models built by this shipyard, or at
least those made in the new millennium, had been
entirely designed by Rob Humphreys's firm, both for
the water lines and for the style; this is the first time
that competences have been divided. By assigning
the water lines to Humphreys and the design to
the Porsche studio, the shipyard is proving beyond
doubt its intention to attack the market again.
The initial sketch joint to the shipyard's press re
-
lease shows a beautiful and innovative boat.
A design product that will not fail to attract
the attention of yachtsmen, especially con-
sidering that the GT range, as proven by the
GT5, has been conceived for cruising but
developed on the same fast hulls that we
find in the performance range, which makes
them remarkably comfortable and fast, a combi
-
nation that is hard to find on one boat.
However, the final judgement can only be made af-
ter launch. It is not the first time that the design firm
of a big automotive company deals with boats and
the previous experience, that of the BMW designers
that created the style of some Bavaria models, was
nothing to write home about.
Boats are a very special product because on the one
hand they have to be stylish and sophisticated, but
on the other hand they are machines used in over-
the-edge conditions, just like trucks running on dirt
roads full of holes.
In Italy, Elan boats are imported by Adria Ship.
