43 SVN Solovelanet Global G oli is located about 8 miles away from Baska on Krk island, 5 miles away from Lopar and just 4 from St. Marin on Rab island. Goli is devoid of towns: there are only the gloomy barracks dating back to its past as a prison island. An equally gloomy train takes tourists to visit the cells and detention places. To the north east of the island there is a large har - bour, which accommodated ships that took priso- ners on the island. The harbour is surrounded by long decommissioned docks, but when mooring here we need to pay attention to the concrete of the piers, that is not very smooth, and to any iron rod coming out where the concrete is most damaged. In addition, many bollards and iron rings have worn out over time, and in order to ensure a good mooring is is essential to have rather long lines. The seabed is about two metres and holds well enough. A narrow street, shaded by maritime pines, winds its way from the harbour to the whole island. Here it is not rare to spot hares and other harmless wild animals. A little further north of the island we find the infa - mous senjska vrata, the passage leading to Senj. Due to the Venturi effect, the bora wind blowing between Krk island and the Prvic islet may reach hurricane force. The harbour of Goli offers shelter from the bora, but in the evening an annoying surf may disturb sleep. In that case, it is advisable to go a few hundred me - tres further south and enter the small harbour which accommodates the tourist boats coming from Krk and Rab. On the quay we find a (quite expensive) re- staurant and some convenient external services. The pier can accommodate 3 or 4 boats moored alongsi- de the berth, and is well sheltered with a depth of 4 to 2 metres. After 6:00 pm the restaurant closes and the managers leave the island until the next morning, and then the pier and the island are entirely at our disposal. On the opposite side of the marina, there is also a convenient barbecue. On the island there are no services of any kind. It is advisable to wear trekking shoes to visit the island along its narrow streets. It is essential to have a mask and snorkel to explore the crystal clear sea and the rich marine life under its surface.
