hen Ed Conijn began transforming
his shipbuilding lumber wholesale
business into a proper shipyard,
initially named Conyplex, he was
most likely unaware that he was
founding one of the longest-running shipyards in the
world. Always run by the same family, the shipyard
continues today, with its new name Contest Yachts,
to manufacture semi-custom yacht series, ranging
from the small and sophisticated 42 to the large and
luxurious 85 footers. Conjin built the shipyyard's first
boat, the "Flying Dutchman," with his own hands. It
was a small sailing boat designed between 1951 and
