After the sinking the sea was full hundreds of of
people. Some prayed, some cried for help, some
desperately tried to reach a lifeboat. But in the
icecold water their chances of survival were pratical

ly nil and in the space of a few minutes they quickly
began to succub to the cold and drown. Carpathia
raced desperately, at the risk of meeting the same
fate as Titanic, but she only arrived at dawn. The
Titanic had gone down with more than 1500 people.
including Captain Smith, violinist Hartley and First
Officer Murdoch. Only 706 people survived. One of
them was Joseph Bruce Ismay, who remained known
for the rest of his life as 'the great coward.'
