T
he pure ocean cat, designed to sail anywhe-
re and anyway, is losing its charm. Those who
live on board and sail around the world, very rarely
pass the great capes. Most of them travel in low or
medium latitudes. If you sail through the canals, the
ocean conditions are very different from those found
at high latitudes, and different boats can be used to
face them. This may be the reason why Catana has
somewhat modified the type of catamaran to offer to
their public.
Without prejudice to excellent construction, with
extensive use of carbon and other noble materials,
the new Catana 50 that is been introduced in these
days shows this course correction.
Hulls are thin to allow for sailing the waves without
jumping on them, an essential requirement for those
wanting to enjoy long catamaran voyages at sea, but
some adjustments, such as the long stern track for
the mainsail trailer, is no longer there, although we
will most likely find it in the option list. It has been
replaced by two hoists that allow for a smoother
control of big main sail.
