The hull
A sail plan proportionally larger than that of the
previous models was also possible thanks to the
bigger hull volumes. In the LC42 project, it was
decided to give more space to the forward cabin.
To be a proper cruiser, the boat needed a spacious
owner's stateroom with generous volumes. To this
purpose, the point where the hull section closes has
been risen. If you look at the boat from the bow, you
can see that the hull lines come out of the water
at the same angle, while usually they tend to close
and rise more straight just above the water. In this
way the hull widens in the lower part, at the height
of the forward bed, giving more volume both to the
cabin and to the bow when heeling upwind. To avoid
unbalancing the boat, this larger forward volume had
to be matched with a similar situation aft. As far as
water lines are concerned, the result was an impro
-
ved shape stability, and this has helped to make it
possible to increase the sail area.
Therefore the 42 is faster, more responsive, and
somewhat more aggressive than the 46. One might
think that this is a contradiction in terms, a cruiser stri
-
ving to be a performance boat, but this is the nature of
the boats built by this shipyard and this is the desire of
those who approach this shipyard: fast boats.
