Above: one of the two races
between TNZ and Luna Rossa, both
lost by Luna Rossa
The foils used by Luna Rossa during
the World Series were the largest of all,
very effective in light winds, less so with
winds above 15 knots
The debut of Luna Rossa
Luna Rossa was excellent in the World Series, co-
ming within a whisker of winning the preliminary
event, ending over by just 10 seconds in the decisi-
ve race against Emirates Team New Zealand. Even
though it did not award points valid for the Cup, the
race was certainly not a "friendly" match. Luna Ros-
sa won all the races against Ineos Team UK, won one
of the two races against American Magic and lost
both races against Team New Zealand. The first one
was nasty with a gap of more than 3 minutes, the
other one just 12 seconds, with Luna Rossa in the
lead most of the race, ntil the whims of the winds of
the Gulf of Hauraki decided to intervene. Luna Rossa
did excellently in light winds, thanks to a set of foils
designed to perform well in these conditions, less so
when the breeze picked up.
The double helmsman formula works, with James
Spithill on tack to starboard and Francesco Bruni on
tack to port. Bruni was always been very active in
tactical calls, as there is no real tactician on the AC
75s, but it is the two helmsmen and mainsail trimmer
Pietro Sibello together who manage the strategy in
Luna Rossa's case.
