The double helmsman formation appears to improve
the speed and precision of manoeuvres, an essential
pro on boats where losing foil support for a few se-
conds means losing hundreds of metres.
The foils
The choice of foils will also be the leitmotif of the
official Prada Cup and America's Cup races, as te-
ams must declare them before the start and cannot
change them between days at sea.
This is a crucial choice that will make it unprofitable
to opt for "extreme" appendages, favouring instead
foils with more all-round profiles, which will perform
well in a wide range of conditions.
O
nly the challengers Luna Rossa, American
Magic and Ineos Team UK are going to take
part in the Prada Cup.It starts on January 15th
with the first robin rounds scheduled until Ja
-
nuary 17th. Then more racing from the 22nd
to the 24th, to earn useful points ahead of the
semi-finals, which are scheduled for 29 January
to 2 February with the matches that will decide
which two boats with the highest scores have
earned the Prada Cup final. The Prada Cup Final
will start on 13 January and will be a best of 13
races, with the winner being whoever reaches
7 wins first. The winner of the Prada Cup will
earn the right to face the New Zealanders in the
America's Cup final from 6-15 March, again in
best of 13 races. All regattas will be broadcast
live and then catch-up by Rai 2 and Rai Sport
free-to-air, and on payment by Sky Sport.
